Great Study Shows Side-Effects Of “Alternative” Care for Back Pain. Are they negative or positive?

July 29th, 2012
J Altern Complement Med. 2010 Feb;16(2):157-63.

Unanticipated benefits of CAM therapies for back pain: an exploration of patient experiences.

Common “alternative” professions include chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, physical therapy and more. ¬†The following study lists the side-effects of patients that selected “alternative” care for there back pain:

“Positive outcome themes included increased options and hope, increased ability to relax, positive changes in emotional states, increased body awareness, changes in thinking that increased the ability to cope with back pain, increased sense of well-being, improvement in physical conditions unrelated to back pain, increased energy, increased patient activation, and dramatic improvements in health or well-being.”

What a great list of side-effects and most of them are far more important than just getting pain relief. ¬†If you are willing to except these types of side-effects which of all are positive I might add, then seek out professions like chiropractic FIRST ¬†to optimize your health. Don’t turn to drugs and surgeries as your first option. The grand majorities of spinal surgeries are a failure. ¬†These should be a last resort unless it is clearly an emergency surgical case like which most of the time it is not. ¬†Pain meds only treat the symptoms while damaging your stomach, kidneys, and liver. “Alternative” or “Complementary” procedures for back pain will in most cases give you the greatest pain relief and provide a better pathway to greater health.

New Study Exposes the Flu Shot as 98.5% Useless instead of “60% Effective”

January 3rd, 2012

The Lancet Infectious Diseases reveals a new study that the flu vaccine prevents lab confirmed type B or type A influenza in only 1.5 out of every 100 vaccinated adults, however the media is reporting this to mean “60 percent effective.”

Annually, only about 2.7% of adults contract type B or type A influenza. This study showed that flu vaccines appear to drop this down to around 1.2%. This is a around a 60% drop, but that ignores the fact that the vaccine has no protective health benefit for 97.5% of adults.

The key to protecting yourself against the flu is to boost your immune system by avoiding sugar (paralyses white blood cells which killviruses and bacteria).  It is also important to supplement with Echinacea, Astragalus Root, Elderberry, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Zinc. It is also very important to get adjusted by your chiropractor. Past studies have shown that drawing the blood after a spinal adjustment showed a 1000% increase in white blood cell count compared to the blood drawn before the adjustment. This means you have a greater immune army to attack foreign invaders.

Hearth Health Part1

May 29th, 2011

People tend to fret over inheriting heart disease if they have a family history of it. This is not surprising, considering that every year almost 1 million Americans die of issues related to the heart. You can rest assured, however, since genetic predisposition is just one factor that can determine whether or not you will develop heart disease. Quite a few factors trump genetic proclivities; these methods have a market effect on the long-term health of your heart. Here are a few tips for supporting and sustaining a healthy heart.

Ways to have a Healthy Heart
Lack of exercise and imbalanced nutrition is cause for alarm; combined, it can cause a lot of damaging health issues, like coronary heart disease. If you change some unhealthy habits now, you’re less likely to have heart issues down the road. Here are a few manageable tips that can have a dramatic effect on your heart.
* Eat lots of heart-healthy foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and that which contains a lot of fiber.
* Ensure that seafood is part of your diet, and that you consume at least two portions of fish per week.
* Watch out for how much trans and saturated fat you consume, in addition to your level of cholesterol. Fat should represent no more than 30% of your daily caloric intake. If you eat animal fat, you can lower some of the saturated fat from your diet. As for trans fat reduction, watch out for hydrogenated vegetable oils.
* Reduce the amount of sodium in your diet. Lowering your consumption will benefit your heart.
* Look for fat-free or low-fat versions of dairy products.
* Aim to get your nutrients from the actual foods that you eat, as opposed to merely seeking them in supplements. Vitamins and minerals in foods like beans and artichokes are very beneficial and tasty.
* Be sure to exercise. For a strong heart, exercise is crucial. To regulate blood pressure and cholesterol, and to ward off diabetes, exercising helps. To achieve benefits for your lifetime, make sure to exercise for 30 minutes or more, five times per week. You don’t have to exercise for 30 minutes at one time; you can walk for 15 minutes in the morning and in the evening. Avoid fad diets if you’re overweight, for they are not to your advantage over the long run. Diets like these overburden your heart as well as your body.
* Consider tai chi. Along with helping people of all ages and conditions with posture and balance, it promotes a healthy heart.
* Steer clear of smoking. You heart’s health depends on you not smoking.

Digestive Disorders Part1

May 12th, 2011

Many studies make a nod to the ability of chiropractors to treat patients afflicted with digestive ailments. Infants with infrequent bowel syndrome displayed almost immediate relief of their symptoms after their chiropractic sessions, according to a study.

Also, a comprehensive study determined a link between spinal misalignments and Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease results in inflammation along the small intestine, affecting any part of the digestive tract. As well as pain, the resulting inflammation leads to diarrhea and frequent emptying of the intestines.

According to prevailing theory, Crohn’s disease is an immune system response to a bacterium or virus. The inflammation of Crohn’s disease is traditionally treated with corticosteroids. But corticosteroids’ serious side-effects may put one at a greater risk of infection. Employed also are drugs that inhibit the immunological system. Researchers of the study sought to look for treatment options that boosted the immune system (as opposed to suppressing it) in a way that did not rely on the use of drugs.

In another study, spinal misalignments were linked with many different types of disorders; among them are Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel disorder, and ulcerative colitis. According to this study, Crohn’s disease symptoms may receive marked improvement when those spinal misalignments are corrected. Findings suggest that chiropractic care has another advantage. Along with treating the digestive condition, chiropractic care also seeks to improve the patient’s quality of life.

To receive a thorough assessment of your particular digestive condition, call you chiropractic doctor
Chiropractors adjust misalignments of the spine that interfere with nerve function. These problems can be painlessly corrected. The problematic symptoms tend to disappear once the misalignment is corrected.

By rehabilitating the digestive process, chiropractic care can help patients who suffer through digestive conditions. Aside from spinal manipulation, your doctor of chiropractor may make use of nutritional counseling. You may also receive recommendations for healing herbs, vitamins, and mineral supplements to enhance the scope of your treatment.

Organic Food Part1

May 3rd, 2011

Like many conscientious consumers, you may have asked yourself, Does organic food equal better, healthier food, or are the advantages more hype than fact?

Firstly, let’s evaluate the word organic and how it is applied Organic farming refers to a system that relies on certain principles of animal, human, and environmental concerns. Farming organically means that chemicals are not employed in planting and harvesting food. Organic farming is part of a larger movement that is concerned with not harming the environment, human beings, and wildlife. Land roughly the size of Italy is used for organic pursuits, and the global organic market is valued at over $27 billion.

What the Organic Label Means
An organic label means two things: that any processors or importers used in association with this food product have been approved, and that it comes from a farm. With processed foods, at least 95% of the agricultural ingredients have to be certified organic. The remaining 5% can consist of non-organic ingredients, but only in the case of approved contents.

The makers of organic food items must stick to the following rules to receive organic certification: No fertilizer can be used, as it has nitrous oxide. Other methods are used to keep soil fertile, such as manure and the rotation of crops. Crop rotation alternates planted crops so natural nutrients are left behind. Instead of using pesticides, farmers can weed and plant different crops side-by-side so that they keep both crops’ pests under control. They can also use particular insects to take out more harmful ones.

They must not use most additives like colorings and preservatives. Humane treatment of animals is a priority. They must be given space to roam, be fed organic food, and farmers must follow minimum slaughter age rules. There are many other humane treatment guidelines for animals.

Genetics And Chiropractic Part1

April 15th, 2011

Along with helping to lower the costs of health care, findings show that chiropractic care (as well as other wellness-based care) is able to positively influence behaviors and well-being. Lately, though, new evidence has shown that chiropractic adjustments can actually affect the chemistry of biological processes (on a cellular level). Chiropractic thus met the field of genetics.

Chiropractic care has actually been found to influence fundamental physiological functions in the body, including DNA repair and oxidative stress. Many patients receiving chiropractic care have described its positive effects with scientific reasoning. Although more research is still pending to illustrate chiropractic care’s role in biological processes, present findings highlight chiropractic care’s effectiveness.

The research focused on looking at serum thiol levels of patients who were not under chiropractic care versus those who were receiving either short-term or long-term chiropractic care. Serum thiol acts as primary antioxidants (measuring human health status). The test provides a substitute estimate of DNA’s repair enzyme activity that is associated with lifespan health. The findings showed that long-term chiropractic care of two years or longer could re-establish normal physiological states for a wide spectrum of patients. Those patients who were free of symptoms while receiving chiropractic treatments displayed greater mean serum thiol levels, as opposed to patients with a persisting disease. These symptom-free patients also displayed levels of serum thiol in greater concentrations when compared to regular wellness values.

The stressors (physical, emotional, chemical) that someone experiences throughout life impinges on the way the nervous system works. It has been shown that nerve function has an effect on oxidative stress and cellular-level DNA recovery. According to experts, oxidative stress (free radicals that are churned in the metabolism) affects how we develop diseases and how we age. Oxidative stress arrives in the form of DNA damage and keeps the DNA from repairing itself. DNA repair compensates for the harm that comes from environmental factors.

Infantile Colic And Chiropractic

March 12th, 2011

UT infantile colic is defined as a well, thriving infant who has crying bouts that last for three hours per day at least three days per week for three weeks. Infantile colic has many theorized contributing factors, such as food allergy or intolerance, excessive gas, and abnormal peristalsis.

In a normal, growing infant, infantile colic can begin between the first and second week of life. After it reaches a peak at around week six, infantile colic ceases during the second to third month. Between 20-30% of all newborns are colicky babies. Infantile colic in Harrisville often begins at the end of a long day, and symptoms show at around the age where the parents have been sleep deprived from caring for the baby. Often, the parents of colic babies become very depressed and highly frustrated.

The chiropractor, Dr. Tyson Bradford DC , will thoroughly examine your infant to determine the severity of the infantile colic. Then your chiropractor will develop a specific plan of management tailored to your infant’s case.

Asthma, a reversible obstructive respiratory disorder, is a condition that is also called hyperactive airways. If asthma is not managed property, it can potentially become life threatening problem called status asthmaticus.

When the smooth muscles in the bronchioles have spastic contractions, asthma occurs and makes it very hard to breathe. The usual cause of asthma is hypersensitivity of the bronchioles to foreign substances in the air, says Dr. Tyson Bradford DC . About 70% of asthma cases in those younger than 30 years old are from allergic hypersensitivity. Asthma in older people is usually caused by non-allergic irritants, like smog, for example. In all cases of asthma, the patient can inhale easily but have trouble exhaling.

If you receive proper management for asthma, you can live an active life and be symptom-free most of the time. Regardless of your current condition, you should continue with UT asthma treatment, even if you feel fine. One of the most important things in asthma treatment is to avoid your asthma triggers such as smoke, cold air and smog. Asthma can also be induced by virus and allergies; it is a good idea to avoid them. Asthma can be controlled with proper treatment, so make sure to keep up with them.

Chiropractic treatments for asthma have been useful in maintaining a symptom-free life; ask your Harrisville chiropractor for more information.
